How to convert km/h to mph

One mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometers, a definition fixed by international agreement in 1959. That makes the conversion exact in both directions.

Exact formula

mph = km/h × 0.621371

Mental shortcut

mph ≈ km/h × 5 ÷ 8

1 km/h
0.621371 mph
1 mph
1.609344 km/h
Meters per second
km/h ÷ 3.6, or mph × 0.44704
Knots
km/h ÷ 1.852, or mph × 0.868976

Worked example: 130 km/h × 0.621371 = 80.8 mph. With the shortcut, 130 × 5 ÷ 8 = 81.3 mph, close enough for a road sign.

Speeds in car specs

0-60 mph vs 0-100 km/h

100 km/h is 62.1 mph, so a 0-100 km/h time runs about 5% longer than the same car's 0-60 mph time. Our 0-60 calculator shows both.

Tire speed ratings

Ratings are set in km/h and converted: H is 210 km/h (130 mph), V 240 km/h (149 mph), Y 300 km/h (186 mph). See the tire speed rating chart.

Top speeds

European spec sheets quote top speed in km/h. 250 km/h (155 mph) is a common electronic limit on German performance cars.

kph, km/h and kmh

All three mean kilometers per hour. km/h is the official form; "km" alone is a distance, not a speed.

Questions people ask

How do I convert km/h to mph?

Multiply the speed in km/h by 0.621371. For example, 100 km/h × 0.621371 = 62.1 mph. For a quick estimate in your head, multiply by 5 and divide by 8.

Is 100 km/h the same as 60 mph?

Almost. 100 km/h is 62.1 mph, so it's a little faster than 60 mph. That's why 0-100 km/h times run slightly longer than 0-60 mph times.

How fast is 120 km/h in mph?

120 km/h is 74.6 mph, close to the 75 mph limit on many US interstates.

How fast is 300 km/h in mph?

300 km/h is 186.4 mph, which is exactly where the Y tire speed rating tops out.

Is kph the same as km/h?

Yes. km/h, kph and kmh all mean kilometers per hour. km/h is the official SI form; kph is common in the UK and US.

Why does my speedometer show both km/h and mph?

Cars are sold across markets that use different units, so many speedometers print both scales. Digital dashboards usually let you switch in the settings menu.
