How to convert lb-ft to Nm
One pound-foot is exactly 1.355818 newton-meters, the conversion factor published by NIST. Multiply any lb-ft or ft-lb torque figure by it to get Nm.
Exact formula
Nm = lb-ft × 1.355818
Mental shortcut
Nm ≈ lb-ft × 4 ÷ 3
- 1 lb-ft
- 1.355818 Nm
- 1 Nm
- 0.737562 lb-ft
- 1 lb-in
- 0.113 Nm (divide lb-in by 12 for lb-ft)
- ft-lb
- Same number as lb-ft for a torque spec
Worked example: a Tesla Model 3's lug nuts are specified at 129 lb-ft. 129 × 1.355818 = 174.9 Nm, and Tesla's manual gives 175 Nm.

lb-ft vs ft-lb vs Nm
lb-ft (pound-feet)
The usual way to write torque: a force of one pound acting one foot from the center of rotation. Engine specs in the US use it.
ft-lb (foot-pounds)
Strictly the unit of work or energy, but torque wrenches and shop manuals often use it for torque. For a torque spec, 80 ft-lb and 80 lb-ft mean the same thing.
Nm (newton-meters)
The SI unit, used on European and Asian spec sheets and in most owner's manuals alongside lb-ft.
kgf·m
An older metric unit still printed in some Japanese manuals. 1 kgf·m = 9.807 Nm = 7.233 lb-ft.
Sources and method
One lb-ft is exactly 1.3558179 Nm, because the pound-force and the foot are both defined in SI units. Engine and lug-nut figures come from the makers linked on this page.

Questions people ask
How do I convert lb-ft to Nm?
Multiply pound-feet by 1.3558. For example, 100 lb-ft × 1.3558 = 135.6 Nm. For a quick estimate, add a third: 90 lb-ft is about 120 Nm.
How many Nm is 100 ft-lb?
100 ft-lb (or lb-ft) is 135.6 Nm.
How many Nm is 20 ft-lb?
20 ft-lb is 27.1 Nm. 15 ft-lb is 20.3 Nm and 5 ft-lb is 6.8 Nm.
Is ft-lb the same as lb-ft?
For a torque spec, yes: both mean a pound of force acting at one foot. Strictly, ft-lb is the unit of work, but torque wrenches use both labels.
How much torque do lug nuts need in Nm?
Most cars and small SUVs use about 100 to 110 Nm (75 to 80 lb-ft); trucks often 175 to 205 Nm (130 to 150 lb-ft). Your owner's manual has the exact figure.
How do I set a torque wrench that only shows Nm?
Convert the lb-ft spec to Nm with this converter and set that value. Most click-type wrenches have both scales; use the one that matches the spec.
