Torque from horsepower and rpm
Horsepower is torque multiplied by how fast the engine turns, so you can't turn a horsepower figure into torque without knowing the rpm it was measured at. With both numbers the conversion is exact: multiply horsepower by 5,252 and divide by the rpm. New to the units? Here is what horsepower means and where the 33,000 comes from. For torque itself, and how much real cars make, see what torque is in a car.
Torque from hp
lb-ft = hp × 5,252 ÷ rpm
In metric
Nm = kW × 9,549 ÷ rpm
- hp
- Horsepower at that rpm. A peak rating only gives the torque at the peak-power rpm.
- rpm
- Engine speed in revolutions per minute.
- 5,252
- 33,000 ÷ 2π, from the definition of one horsepower as 33,000 foot-pounds per minute.
Worked example: Ford rates the 2026 Mustang GT at 480 hp at 7,150 rpm. 480 × 5,252 ÷ 7,150 = 353 lb-ft, which is the torque the V8 is still making at its power peak. Its torque peak of 415 lb-ft comes much earlier, at 4,900 rpm.
Horsepower from torque and rpm
The same formula run backwards gives horsepower: multiply torque in lb-ft by rpm and divide by 5,252. This is how a dyno works. It measures the torque at the wheels or crank and the speed, and calculates horsepower from the two.
HP from torque
hp = lb-ft × rpm ÷ 5,252
In metric
kW = Nm × rpm ÷ 9,549
Worked example: Ford's 6.7-liter high-output diesel makes 1,200 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm. 1,200 × 1,600 ÷ 5,252 = 366 hp. Its 500 hp peak comes at 2,600 rpm, so huge torque at low rpm doesn't mean huge horsepower.
For horsepower from a time slip, a trap speed or a 0-60 time, use the Horsepower Calculator.
Why hp and torque cross at 5,252 rpm
One horsepower is 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute. One pound-foot of torque turning through one revolution does 2π foot-pounds of work, and 33,000 ÷ 2π = 5,252. So at exactly 5,252 rpm the horsepower number and the lb-ft number are the same, and on any dyno chart drawn in hp and lb-ft the two curves cross there.
- Below 5,252 rpm, the torque number is bigger than the horsepower number.
- Above 5,252 rpm, the horsepower number is bigger.
- In kW and Nm the crossover moves to 9,549 rpm (60,000 ÷ 2π), so on a metric chart the curves usually never meet.
The crossover is a property of the units, not of the engine. Torque vs horsepower explains what each number means for how a car drives.

What the table shows. No engine here makes peak torque at its peak-power rpm. High-revving engines such as the GT3 and the ZX-10R make their power by spinning fast, turbo engines hold a flat torque plateau from low rpm, and the diesel makes the most torque by far but the least horsepower per liter, because it peaks at under 3,000 rpm. Where a range is given, the torque-at-peak-power figure uses the bottom of the range.
Ratings from the makers' spec pages; the Corvette and CT5-V rpm figures come from J.D. Power and Kelley Blue Book because the makers' pages give no rpm. ZX-10R figures are converted from Kawasaki's 149.3 kW and 114.9 Nm.
kW and Nm: the metric version
Nm from kW
Nm = kW × 9,549 ÷ rpm. A 200 kW engine at 5,000 rpm makes 382 Nm.
kW from Nm
kW = Nm × rpm ÷ 9,549. The constant is 60,000 ÷ 2π.
Mixing units
1 kW is 1.341 hp and 1 Nm is 0.7376 lb-ft. Switch the calculator's units and it converts both ways.
PS figures
Metric horsepower (PS) is 735.5 W, about 1.4% less than a mechanical horsepower. Convert PS with the PS to HP converter first.
Sources and method
Torque = hp × 5,252 ÷ rpm follows from the definition of one horsepower as 33,000 foot-pounds per minute; in metric units, kW = Nm × rpm ÷ 9,549. Engine figures come from manufacturer spec pages, or from J.D. Power and Kelley Blue Book where the maker gives no rpm.

Questions people ask
How do I convert hp to torque?
Multiply horsepower by 5,252 and divide by the rpm. For example, 300 hp at 6,000 rpm is 300 × 5,252 ÷ 6,000 = 263 lb-ft.
Can you convert horsepower to torque without the rpm?
No. Horsepower is torque multiplied by engine speed, so the same horsepower can come from high torque at low rpm or low torque at high rpm. You need the rpm the horsepower was measured at.
Why do horsepower and torque cross at 5,252 rpm?
Because one horsepower is 33,000 foot-pounds per minute and one revolution is 2π radians: 33,000 ÷ 2π = 5,252. At that speed the hp and lb-ft numbers are equal. In kW and Nm the crossover is at 9,549 rpm.
How do I calculate torque in Nm from kW?
Multiply kilowatts by 9,549 and divide by the rpm. A 200 kW engine at 5,000 rpm makes 200 × 9,549 ÷ 5,000 = 382 Nm.
Is peak torque at the same rpm as peak horsepower?
Almost never. Torque usually peaks lower in the rev range and horsepower keeps rising after it because rpm keeps climbing. The 2026 Mustang GT, for example, makes peak torque at 4,900 rpm and peak power at 7,150 rpm.
How is engine torque measured?
On a dynamometer. The dyno measures the twisting force and the speed, then calculates horsepower from the two with the same formula this calculator uses.
