How to convert hp to kW

James Watt defined one horsepower as 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute. In SI units that is 745.7 watts, so to turn horsepower into kilowatts you multiply by 0.7457.

Exact formula

kW = hp × 0.74570

Mental shortcut

kW ≈ hp × 3 ÷ 4

1 hp
0.74570 kW, or 745.7 W
1 bhp
0.74570 kW, the same unit measured at the crank
1 PS
0.73550 kW (metric horsepower)
1 kW
1.34102 hp

Worked example: a 300 hp engine × 0.7457 = 223.7 kW. With the shortcut, 300 × 3 ÷ 4 = 225 kW, about half a percent high.

Small-engine sizes at the top, then the ratings you meet on car spec sheets. The PS column is what a European brochure would print for the same power.

Converting bhp, PS and whp to kW

bhp to kW

Brake horsepower is measured at the crankshaft with the engine's ancillaries fitted, but the unit is the same. Multiply by 0.7457: 200 bhp is 149.1 kW.

PS to kW

Metric horsepower (PS, CV or ch) is 735.5 W. Multiply by 0.7355: 200 PS is 147.1 kW. Mixing up PS and hp is the most common conversion error; the PS to hp converter does both.

whp to kW

Wheel horsepower is lower than the crank figure. Convert it to kW directly to compare dyno sheets, or first estimate crank power with the whp to hp calculator.

Electrical hp

Some motor nameplates use an electrical horsepower of exactly 746 W. The difference from 745.7 W is too small to matter outside a lab.

For where each horsepower figure is measured, and how much the numbers differ in practice, read WHP vs BHP vs HP.

Sources and method

One mechanical horsepower is 745.69987 W, so 1 hp = 0.745700 kW; metric horsepower (PS) is 735.49875 W. Car ratings come from the manufacturers linked in the table.

Questions people ask

How do I convert hp to kW?

Multiply the horsepower by 0.7457. For example, 300 hp × 0.7457 = 223.7 kW. For a quick estimate, multiply by 3 and divide by 4.

How many kW is 100 hp?

100 hp is 74.6 kW. 200 hp is 149.1 kW and 500 hp is 372.8 kW.

How do I convert bhp to kW?

The same way as hp: multiply by 0.7457. Brake horsepower is measured at the crankshaft but uses the same unit, so 150 bhp is 111.9 kW.

How do I convert PS to kW?

Multiply by 0.7355. PS is metric horsepower, which is 1.4% smaller than a mechanical horsepower, so 150 PS is 110.3 kW.

Is 1 hp equal to 0.75 kW?

Close. One mechanical horsepower is 0.7457 kW, and the rounded 0.75 is fine for quick estimates. The exact factor matters when a licence or tax rule sets a kW limit.

Why do European cars list kW and PS?

The kilowatt is the official unit for vehicle power in the EU and many other countries, so it goes on the paperwork, while PS is the traditional figure buyers know. US brochures use horsepower instead.
