How to convert Nm to lb-ft
Torque is a force times the distance at which it acts. A newton-meter is one newton acting one meter from the center; a pound-foot is one pound of force acting one foot away. NIST defines 1 lb-ft as exactly 1.355818 Nm, so converting the other way means multiplying by 0.737562.
Exact formula
lb-ft = Nm × 0.737562
Mental shortcut
lb-ft ≈ Nm × 3 ÷ 4
- 1 Nm
- 0.737562 lb-ft
- 1 lb-ft
- 1.355818 Nm
- 1 kgf·m
- 9.807 Nm, or 7.233 lb-ft
- ft-lb
- Same number as lb-ft for a torque spec
Worked example: a Toyota GR86 makes 250 Nm. 250 × 0.737562 = 184.4 lb-ft, and Toyota's US figure is 184 lb-ft.

Torque decides how hard a vehicle pulls at a given rpm; horsepower is torque multiplied by how fast the engine turns. Torque vs horsepower explains which matters when, and our guide to what torque is in a car covers the basics.
Lug-nut and bolt torque specs
Wheel nuts are the most common torque spec drivers deal with. Too loose and a wheel can come off; too tight and you can stretch studs or warp brake rotors. These are the factory figures for some popular vehicles:

| Vehicle | lb-ft | Nm |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota CamryOwner's manual, via CamryGuides | 76 lb-ft | 103 Nm |
| Honda Civic (2021)American Honda | 80 lb-ft | 108 Nm |
| Honda CR-V (2023)American Honda | 80 lb-ft | 108 Nm |
| Tesla Model 3Tesla owner's manual | 129 lb-ft | 175 Nm |
| Jeep Wrangler (2022)Owner's manual copy | 130 lb-ft | 176 Nm |
| Chevrolet Silverado 1500GM owner's manuals, via GM-Trucks.com | 140 lb-ft | 190 Nm |
| Ford F-150Ford owner's manual, via a Ford dealer | 150 lb-ft | 203 Nm |
Specs change with model year, wheel type and stud size, so always check your own owner's manual. Tighten in a star pattern, and check the torque again after the first 50 to 100 miles, especially on new or alloy wheels.
lb-ft vs ft-lb vs Nm
lb-ft (pound-feet)
The usual way to write torque: a force of one pound acting one foot from the center of rotation. Engine specs in the US use it.
ft-lb (foot-pounds)
Strictly the unit of work or energy, but torque wrenches and shop manuals often use it for torque. For a torque spec, 80 ft-lb and 80 lb-ft mean the same thing.
Nm (newton-meters)
The SI unit, used on European and Asian spec sheets and in most owner's manuals alongside lb-ft.
kgf·m
An older metric unit still printed in some Japanese manuals. 1 kgf·m = 9.807 Nm = 7.233 lb-ft.
Sources and method
One lb-ft is exactly 1.3558179 Nm, because the pound-force and the foot are both defined in SI units, so 1 Nm = 0.737562 lb-ft. Engine and lug-nut figures come from the makers linked on this page.

Questions people ask
How do I convert Nm to lb-ft?
Multiply newton-meters by 0.7376. For example, 400 Nm × 0.7376 = 295 lb-ft. For a quick estimate, multiply by 3 and divide by 4.
How many lb-ft is 100 Nm?
100 Nm is 73.8 lb-ft. 200 Nm is 147.5 lb-ft and 500 Nm is 368.8 lb-ft.
Is Nm to ft-lb the same as Nm to lb-ft?
Yes, for torque. Torque wrenches often say ft-lb and engine specs say lb-ft, but a torque figure converts the same way: multiply Nm by 0.7376.
How many lb-ft is 25 Nm?
25 Nm is 18.4 lb-ft, a typical spec for small bolts and spark plugs.
What is a normal engine torque in Nm?
Compact cars make roughly 180 to 250 Nm, turbo fours and V6s about 350 to 550 Nm, and heavy-duty diesel pickups over 1,300 Nm.
Should I torque lug nuts to the Nm or lb-ft figure?
Either, as long as your wrench is set in the same unit. Use the figure from your owner's manual; typical cars use about 100 to 110 Nm (75 to 80 lb-ft).
