“Fastest 0-60 car” has two honest answers, because there are two kinds of numbers. Magazines run their own instrumented tests on ordinary surfaces. Manufacturers publish their best run, often on a prepared drag strip. We keep the two lists separate, so you’re never comparing a claim with a test.

Last updated 29 September 2026: added quarter-mile times, the quickest cars under $50,000 and how the record has moved.

Quickest cars in independent testing

Times from Car and Driver and MotorTrend, which both subtract a one-foot rollout (about 0.2 seconds) in line with drag-strip timing.

Car and Driver’s Corvette ZR1X beat both the Lucid and the Porsche by a tenth. In MotorTrend’s own testing, the Lucid Air Sapphire edged the Taycan Turbo GT Weissach by just 0.006 seconds. At this level, tires, temperature and the battery’s state of charge decide the order as much as the cars do.

Bar chart of the quickest 0-60 mph times in independent tests, led by the Corvette ZR1X at 1.8 seconds
Independent 0-60 mph times with a one-foot rollout. Only the Model S Plaid time is MotorTrend’s; the rest are Car and Driver’s.

Fastest 0-60 ever recorded

The record has fallen quickly. Car and Driver’s Taycan Turbo GT test in late 2024 was the first sub-2-second production-car run in its testing. The Lucid Air Sapphire matched it on optional track tires. Then the Corvette ZR1X arrived: 2.1 seconds in Car and Driver’s first test in March 2026, and 1.8 seconds in a June 2026 retest, which shows how much conditions and setup matter even for the same car.

Among manufacturer claims, the McMurtry Spéirling Pure’s 1.55 seconds is the quickest figure published, but it is a fan-assisted single-seater tested by its maker, not an independent run.

Purpose-built race cars are another world. An F1 car needs about 2.6 seconds to 60 mph, slower than the road cars above, while a Top Fuel dragster gets there in under half a second.

Why claims and tests disagree

Prepared surfaces

Drag strips are coated with traction compound. Chevrolet’s 1.68-second ZR1X run was on one; Car and Driver’s 1.8 was not.

Rollout, or not

Most US magazines subtract a one-foot rollout, worth about 0.2 seconds. Edmunds doesn’t: it measured 2.2 seconds for the Lucid Air Sapphire without rollout, 2.1 with it.

Tires and options

Optional track tires can make the difference. MotorTrend’s record-setting Sapphire wore the optional Pirelli track tire package.

Conditions and charge

Track temperature, engine heat and, for EVs and hybrids, battery charge all move the result by tenths.

Why the list is electric and hybrid

Every car on the tested list except the Bugatti and the rear-drive Corvette uses electric motors. Motors deliver full torque from standstill, can control each wheel’s slip thousands of times a second, and never pause for a gear change. Even the fastest combustion cars now add a front electric motor, as the ZR1X and SF90 do, to get power down through all four wheels.

The other shared ingredient is traction. Past roughly 1 g of acceleration, tires rather than power set the limit, which is why the quickest cars are all-wheel drive and why the McMurtry uses fans to press itself into the road.

How hard is 1.8 seconds?

0-60 in 1.8 seconds averages about 1.5 g, one and a half times your body weight pressing you into the seat. Try any time in the g-force calculator.

Where two 0-60 times are shown, the first is MotorWeek’s and the second is Edmunds’, which does not subtract rollout. The GR Corolla’s 0-60 is Car and Driver’s and its quarter mile is Edmunds’. Prices are approximate starting prices when tested. The Tesla Model 3 Performance, at 2.8 seconds in Road & Track’s test, just misses this list on price.

Hypercar pace for less

You don’t need a seven-figure budget to get near the top. The Corvette ZR1X starts at about $210,000 according to Chevrolet, a fraction of the multi-million-dollar hypercars it outran in testing. The Lucid Air Sapphire and Porsche Taycan Turbo GT sit around $245,000 to $250,000. Further down, a Tesla Model 3 Performance for well under $60,000 ran 0-60 in 2.8 seconds in Road & Track’s test.

Quickest SUV

Porsche claims 2.4 seconds to 60 mph for the Cayenne Turbo Coupe Electric, the quickest of any SUV on official figures, despite weighing around 2,650 kg. Rivian’s quad-motor R1S and R1T claim 2.5 to 2.6 seconds, though independent tests have come out slower.

How does your car compare?

Key takeaways

  1. Quickest tested: Corvette ZR1X, 1.8 seconds and 8.9 seconds in the quarter mile (Car and Driver).
  2. Quickest claimed: McMurtry Spéirling Pure, 1.55 seconds; Rimac Nevera R, 1.66.
  3. Quickest tested under about $50,000: Volvo EX30 Twin Motor Performance, 3.3 to 3.5 seconds.
  4. Never compare a manufacturer claim with an independent test.
  5. Electric motors and all-wheel drive dominate because traction, not power, is the limit.

FAQ

What car has the fastest 0-60?

In independent testing, the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X at 1.8 seconds in Car and Driver’s test. On manufacturer claims, the McMurtry Spéirling Pure at 1.55 seconds, followed by the Rimac Nevera R at 1.66.

What is the fastest 0-60 production car?

Among regular production cars you can buy, the Corvette ZR1X holds the tested record. Limited-run hypercars such as the Rimac Nevera R claim quicker times, but those are manufacturer figures.

What is the fastest 0-60 ever recorded?

In independent production-car testing, 1.8 seconds, by the Corvette ZR1X in Car and Driver’s June 2026 retest. Quicker figures, such as the McMurtry’s 1.55 seconds, are manufacturer claims.

What is the quickest car under $50,000?

Of the cars we found with independent tests, the Volvo EX30 Twin Motor Performance: 3.3 seconds in MotorWeek’s test and 3.5 seconds without rollout in Edmunds’. Among gas cars, the Volkswagen Golf R ran 4.1 to 4.5 seconds.

What is the fastest gas-powered car to 60 mph?

Without any electric assistance, the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport and the rear-drive Corvette ZR1 both recorded 2.2 seconds in Car and Driver’s testing.

Why are the fastest accelerating cars electric?

Electric motors make full torque from a standstill, manage wheel slip almost instantly and don’t need to shift gears. Combined with all-wheel drive, that turns more of their power into forward motion off the line.
